As someone with an adolescence full of house music, nitrous balloons and several bad k-hole experiences who is now a mother to a preteen... this is a really amazingly true feeling story for anyone to write but especially so for a man. Not that boys weren't at parties and that fathers don't love their children but that early mother and infant bond is extremely difficult to convey without getting saccharine. The empathy shown here for a damaged young woman is beautiful.
Thank you, I appreciate it so much when someone can see what I was getting at! Reviews suggest I deal with empathy well, which is probably why the love for Lost Solace is so broad. :-) You would probably enjoy It Will Be Quick as there are a few other stories like this. Once again, thanks for the kind comments. They'd make a great review basis. :-)
I ordered it, I'm kind of sorry I deleted my Goodreads account now. I read A LOT but it got problematic for several reasons (Goodreads not reading lol).
I totally understand - I still use Goodreads, but I have deleted a lot of other accounts (Twitter, Facebook, Amazon). Sometimes we enjoy books more if we don't have to write reviews!
I'd have happily sent you a free ebook version (if that's your format of preference), but still I appreciate the sale! Many thanks! :-)
I'm always glad to support short story writers especially, my favorites are Kelly Link, Steve Rasnic Tem, Jeffrey Ford and basically anyone else doing that weird (capital W or not) kind of magical realism/speculative fiction/horror combination? I read most everything or have done (not Amish romance though) but it's always been short stories and LCRW was something I stumbled across in print when it first came out and I've been in love ever since.
I know I've read Tem, but can't remember what book/stories off-hand. Maybe it was when I was judging the Bram Stoker awards? I love short stories too, even though I've only written two short story collections (It Will Be Quick and They Move Below).

How awesome to get to read all of the submissions for that, even the ones that don't win are usually good or great. Not always.
100% Rachel. :)
