I am sorry to bring up such a painful topic.

Also, I’m writing this from a UK perspective, but much of it will apply regardless of what country you live in, and who your evil overlords are.

If you make money from writing and selling books then, whether you are a trade-published author or independent, you may well need to pay tax. The procedures are different in every country, so check whatever rules exist within yours. There should be plenty of guidance on the tax department web pages. And I hope if you have the misfortune of needing to contact your national governmental money extortion organisation, they are easier to contact than the UK’s HMRC, which I’ve always found to be painful since they are the opposite of customer-focussed.

(Obviously, now that I have said that my tax bill next year will be in the millions, with no explanation as to how it was calculated. Oops.)
