I like words. So it is no surprise that I sometimes do a word puzzle whilst having my morning cuppa. If you haven’t tried these, they generally provide a new puzzle each day, and an (optional) way to share your score if you succeed. They’re usually based around guessing a word (or words, or film) in a fixed number of tries. It normally only takes a minute or two, like a very quick version of a crossword to get your brain in gear. So here are some that I have dipped in to – in each case, the name of the puzzle takes you to today’s challenge.
Wordle
Guess the hidden word in six tries. A new puzzle is available each day.
Quordle
If you get good at that, then Quordle is four games at once! Once you realise how Quordle works, it is easy to play, but I had to read the ? guide first and play a practice. I often get all four, but only on my last go.
Absurdle
Absurdle is Wordle, but where the computer can keep changing the word if you get too close. It makes it harder but it is still doable, and it never cheats. This is a good option for people who like to go head to head with an AI! Fun fact: Absurdle is written by qntm, the author of a book that impressed me mightily, There Is No Antimemetics Division.
Sweardle
Sweardle is Wordle but with rude or swear words (though not always very rude – a recent one was “pert”, so felt more Carry On). Four letters, four guesses.
Waffle
Waffle is about swapping letters to solve a number of words at once, in fewer than fifteen goes. At first you may fail, but after a few days you get the hang of it.
Worldle
Worldle is a daily geography one – you get feedback about distance and direction of the correct answer after every guess. This is not my speciality.
Framed
Framed is a film one, a single shot at a time. I usually get it on my second guess if I am going to get it at all.
Moviedle
Moviedle is where a whole film is shown in a one second clip, then a two second clip etc (and you can play previous days). I often guess them on my second or third guesses, but I do watch a lot of films!
Have fun! Have you played any of these? Don’t blame me if you get addicted to doing your favourite one every day.
